Sixth Biennial Pinehurst Alumni Retreat
As Steve Arters ’77 shared in his article, Pinehurst: A Growing Phenomenon, published in the January 2025 of The Shield, the event that began as a small alumni gathering in 2014 has now become the ‘I do not want to miss event’ for alumni brothers of WV Alpha!
Held in early June, over 90 brothers converged on the “Home of American Golf” for three days of camaraderie and tradition.
This year’s itinerary offered a variety of activities beyond the links:
- Golf: The centerpiece of the retreat, participants played at Talamore, Pinewild, and Longlief. A “best ball” event on Saturday may become a standard in the future allowing all brothers to contribute.
- Pickleball: This popular paddle sport has become a morning fixture for the paddle enthusiasts. A fun, competitive activity enjoyed by many.
- Skeet: As an alternative to golf, several brothers enjoy their shotguns to break clay targets launched from various shooting stations.
- Bourbon Tasting: B Hawk Distillery, started by retired Army veterans Brad & Jessica Halling, hosted a bourbon tasting and lunch.
- Biking: Several brothers bring their bikes and explore the National Historic Landmark District’s beautiful, tree-lined avenues.
Brothers representing six different decades attended. The event has grown significantly from its humble beginnings as past attendees gathered, their faces showing the passage of time, but their spirits as youthful as ever. They shared laughter and old stories, catching up on each other’s lives and reminiscing about their college days. The bonds of brotherhood, forged years ago, were clearly still strong, creating an atmosphere of warmth and shared history. The reunion is a testament to the lasting friendships and connections made during their time in the fraternity, a reminder that some ties endure regardless of the years that have passed.
Most importantly, younger brothers are attending and making their memories.
