Homecoming + Founders Day 2023

A WVU Football weekend now starts on Friday afternoon with the annual Greek Hall of Fame Induction. Rick Pill ’70 became our chapter’s 4th inductee. Rick was presented by his Brother David Pill ’74. It should also be noted that Susan Hardesty (wife of David Hardesty ’64) was also inducted. This ceremony was followed by the Homecoming Parade featuring floats, marching bands, and various community groups

On Saturday, the Mountaineers lost to Oklahoma State, 48-34, in a high scoring game. Tailgating was in full “go mode” throughout the Blue Lot.

On Sunday morning over 90 alumni, undergrads, and the current pledge class gathered at the Erickson Alumni Center for brunch and a program. A highlight of the event is the recognition of Brothers celebrating 50-years (1973) in Phi Psi. Present to receive their gold pins were: Bob Bird, David Morris, and Wayne Hall. Congrats to all living Brothers celebrating this milestone.

Jack Penwell, VGP of the Chapter, provided an update regarding the chapter, rush, and activities on campus. The Chapter continues to excel in academics and (intramural) athletics.

The inaugural West Virginia Alpha Seth A. Underwood Scholarship ($250) was presented to Jeffrey Morrison II ’18. Brother Morrison is currently attending WVU Law School. This award is for a brother attending graduate/professional school.

It was established in the spring of 2022 as a tribute to Seth Underwood ’17 who died in 2020. Seth was a graduate of West Virginia University and a second-year student at the West Virginia University College of Law. Seth was not only a scholar, but very involved in his campus, the WV Alpha Chapter of Phi Kappa Psi, and his community. He was the president of the WVU Law Chapter of the Federal Bar Association. To date, the scholarship has been funded by the Underwood Family and Lee Pyles ’77. The committee members include: Charlie Hageboeck ’17, Zac Wilhide ’17, Skyler Humphrey ’17, and Seth’s mom, Kelly Underwood.

Ten Brothers (see Chapter Eternal in newsletter) who passed during 2023 were recognized and remembered by the calling of the roll. Our Memorial Service, written by Brother Hale Posten ’21 in 1922, is a time of solemnity and a time of celebration of life.

As the current vice-chair of the WVU Board of Governors, Rick Pill offered updates in terms of the University, and the challenging financial times. The University has begun an Academic Transformation to re-structure the institution. I would also like to note that Rick has attended every home football game for 61-years! That is a phenomenal record, and I should note he is competing with an alumnus from another school for the collegiate ALL-TIME RECORD.
